Chilly Kariwos Rapids

It was a chilly morning when we hit the river of Calbiga Samar to get to Kariwos Rapids. Have I told you I almost drown by a river!? haha Redundant much!? My love for Mother Nature is more important to forget all bad experiences I had with the environment.

Getting there

I grew up in Catbalogan but my relatives and parents were originally from Calbiga Samar. Calbiga Samar is just one hour away from Tacloban, City. Lately a lot of foreigners had been visiting the town to explore the Country’s biggest cave. I’ve been in that cave when I was in highschool when fewer people have interest in the cave, and no guides or complete facilities. I’ve always wanted to come back but now it’s expensive to do spelunking to Calbiga Cave. My mama told me that there are alternative activities to do in the town and so she invited me and my friend Karen to try Kariwos Rapids, less dangerous and very accessible. The said place is 30 minutes away from the town proper that can be reach through a motor boat.

I haven’t explored much of Calbiga yet. It was my first time to go to the rapids and it was a refreshing experience. We were able to see children having themselves carried away by the rivers current which I could say dangerous but it seems like they’re used to it. The rapids had been there playground and I found myself envious to see them monkeying around the river, not afraid, not knowing what’s danger for them, just going with the flow, and I was like “why I am not that cool when I was their age!?”.  Well, I enjoyed my childhood but I wish I had experience the same.

Just Chillin

Family Bonding

Our guide told us that the river is connected to Lulugayan falls, one of the best falls located in Samar. Well, I will consider that as one of my destinations when I return for a vacation aside from Calbiga Cave.
